All Your Perfects by Colleen Hoover: A Book Review from Someone Living with Infertility
Hey Friend!
I wanted to share one of my favorite books with you today.
I read this book a few years ago and I sobbed my way through it. At that time I felt so alone in my infertility journey and this book captured every emotion I was experiencing. It made me feel so seen! Especially when I was surrounded by pregnancy announcements, and nobody understood what it was like going through infertility.
Most people say All Your Perfects by Colleen Hoover is about a damaged couple with an imperfect marriage. But this book is so much more than a messy relationship. In this book the couple had been dealing with infertility for awhile, and Colleen Hoover did such an incredible job portraying all the emotions that go along with that.
I can't begin to tell you how much comfort I found while reading this book, even though I cried the entire time reading it! And I completely lost it reading this at the ending! It felt like exactly what we were going through!
We've been trying.
Trying to have a baby. Trying to adopt a baby. Trying to pretend we're ok. Trying to hide from each other when we cry.
It's all our marriage has become. A whole lot of trying and not much succeeding.
I truly believed we could make it through all the Category 5s we faced, but I think this year has been a Category 6.
- All Your Perfects by Colleen Hoover
When it comes to Colleen Hoover, it seems like people are on one end of the spectrum or the other in terms of whether or not they like her books. I've honestly only read 2 of her books. The first was All Your Perfects, and I don't think there is any book that can live up to that one for me just because it holds such a special place in my heart!
I think my favorite part of this book, and also the hardest part to read about was the ending. The couple has repaired their relationship and they are doing better, but, they still don't have their baby. Their infertility was not cured. Back when I read this book, that was a few years into our infertility, before the fertility testing and the diagnosis that told me why we aren't getting pregnant.
Around that time, when people did hear that we were going through infertility they would say things like, "It will happen someday. You have time." And like I said, it had already been a few years and I was so worried that they would be wrong.Well, fast forward to now. They were wrong. It has not happened and in order to get pregnant we would need medical intervention and a miracle!
So while the ending of the book gave me a little anxiety of maybe we also will never get pregnant, it also gave me hope that even if we never get pregnant, we will be ok.
Back to the quote I shared, I still feel the emotions I was feeling when I read that for the first time. At that time we had been trying to get pregnant for years. We also were early on in our adoption journey. And It sure felt like our marriage was a lot of trying and no succeeding!
It was the hardest time of my life!
Now, a few more years have passed. We were blessed to adopt our son, who just turned 3! We still haven't become pregnant, we are going to try IVF next year. I don't know if that will lead to a baby. I think that thought would have scared me a lot more back then. But now I am confident that we will be ok no matter what. And I loved how that was the ending of this book. That even though their circumstances of infertility didn't change, they were ok.
If you are going through infertility or you know someone who is going through infertility, this might be a book for you.
As always, thanks for reading!
