What Kind of Paradise Book Review

Hi Friend!

I have another book review for you! As I mentioned in a previous book review, this is more of a short collection of my thoughts and reactions about What Kind of Paradise instead of a whole review on the book's plot and characters and content warnings and all of that. And honestly, whenever I sit down to write a report on the book I've just read my mind goes blank. I can't tell you the character's names or what happens or anything! But if yo ask me what I thought about the book and my reaction to it, you are more likely to get a more in depth answer!

So if you want to know what What Kind of Paradise is about, you might have to look the summary up elsewhere, but if you want to know what I thought about it, stick around!

What Kind of Paradise by Janelle Brown ★★★★★

Coming-of-age genre | Family dysfunction and loyalty | Throwback to the '90s

Raised in complete isolation by her idealistic father, a teenage girl begins to question everything she's ever known after uncovering a disturbing truth about her past.

I got this book in my monthly Book of the Month box and read it book back in 2025 and it fulfilled my reading challenge category technology themed.

I really enjoyed this one and I couldn't put it down. There was something so gripping about following Jane's life as her world slowly unraveled.

This book explored the rise of early technology (which I found super interesting!), the blurry line between delusion and conviction, family dysfunction and loyalty, moral ambiguity, the rise of technology and Ai, and how people can convince themselves that wrong is right.

It was haunting, thought-provoking, and so compelling. It is not my usual go to for a read, but this book made me think and ponder so many different questions as I was reading it!

I think what hooked me most was how layered and unsettling it felt. It was a really good read!

My Favorite Quotes

"I believe that civilization's path is a pendulum that swings both ways, vacillating between hope and despair, success and failure, and all we can do is hang on for dear life. Because it will never, ever stop."

"Sometimes love manifests itself as a kind of amazed awe, as potent a feeling as any other form of connection: the shock of knowing that you are desired just as you are, no matter how broken you might feel."

"Sometimes it's not about either/or but about learning how to manage the complexities of both/and."

A Note on Book of the Month

As I've mentioned, I received What Kind of Paradise through Book of the Month which is just one out of many books I have gotten over the months from them, and it has quickly become one of my favorite book subscription boxes. I've tried a handful of different book boxes over the years, and this is one that I have stayed with.

One of the things I love most is that you get to choose your book each month instead of receiving a surprised pick. They usually offer around seven brand-new releases across different genres (sometimes even early releases!), so there's almost always something that catches my eye. I've discovered several books through Book of the Month that ended up being 5 star reads! And if a month's selections doesn't interest me, I am able to skip that month no problem. And best of all, there is no waitlist to sign up or long-term commitment!

If you've been thinking about trying it, you can you my referral link to join for just $5 on your first box. If you do sign up using my referral link, I'll receive a free Book of the Month credit for a book at no extra cost to you, which helps feed my ever-growing TBR, so thank you if you decide to use it!

As always, thanks for reading!
